Flex-ability

Being flexible is key characteristic for effective instructors. We've all been told that no plan survives contact with the enemy. Well, no lesson plan survives contact with our students either! This is not to suggest that students are in any way the enemy--the enemy to rigidity, perhaps, but certainly not to instructors or effective learning.  Rather, it is an acceptance that while the speicific lesson plan is likely to change, the goal--the concept to be learned--does not.  As instructors, we need to provide students with many ways of reaching the goal and we need to be flexible to their input as well.

What is FLEX?

FLEX stands for flexible learning environment exchange. Or maybe just flexible. The goal is to provide ideas for increased student interactivity, whether they are in a face to face setting or fully online. It also makes me think of the need for multiple modes in order to meet Universal Design principles. And of course I think about some other connections, too, like "flex-ing" your mental muscles or establishing "re-flex" actions in order to target optimal behaviors. I'm sure I'll have a few more flex time idea as well. I'll keep you posted. Maybe with some "reflexion."
